
Kate Buckley is a ninth-generation Kentuckian who grew up listening to stories at her great-grandmother's knee. She studied at Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky where she earned a BA in Advertising, and holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University. She is Poet Laureate Emerita of Laguna Beach, California.
Kate's essays, poems and stories have appeared in variety of journals including: 2nd & Church, Bellingham Review, Belmont Story Review, The Cafe Review, New Southerner, North American Review, Rattle, Shenandoah, Slipstream and Spillway, and in numerous anthologies. She's the author of A Wild Region: Poems & Paintings (Moon Tide Press) and Follow Me Down (Tebot Bach).
Honors & awards include a Gabehart Prize for Imaginative Writing (poetry) and North American Review's James Hearst Poetry Prize, selected by Molly Peacock. She is also a four-time Pushcart Prize nominee (poetry and creative nonfiction). Kate's short story, "The Gods of Flight," was short-listed for the Bridport Prize. Her poem, "Harlan County," was featured as The Poetry Foundation's poem of the day (7/28/2014).
A classically trained artist working primarily in acrylics and mixed media collage, Kate's work has been published in fine journals such as The Adirondack Review and New Southerner, and purchased by such entities as The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Her paintings are in private collections in California, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, and New York, and have been exhibited in galleries and showrooms in Laguna Beach and Newport Beach, California. Her paintings are available for purchase; she occasionally accepts commissions.
Kate has conducted numerous workshops for both professional writers as well as aspiring writers, school children, and at-risk teens; her teaching and lecturing experience includes Loyola Marymount University, Chapman University, Spalding University MFA Program, The Story Expo, Ventura County Writers Group, and the Orange County Imagination Celebration. She has volunteered extensively in the literary community, including working with young readers at the Boys and Girls Club, Glennwood House of Laguna Beach, the Orange County Public Libraries, Laguna Beach Community & Susi Q Center, and Women Wonder Writers. Kate served as poet of occasion at the 2009 Laguna Beach Presidential Inaugural Gala and adjudicator for the Laguna Beach Library Poetry Contest, the Ventura County Writers Club Poetry Contest, and Poetry Out Loud in conjunction with the NEA and the Poetry Foundation (Orange County, California and Lexington, Kentucky). She's a current member of Laguna Poets, cofounder of Women Poets of Laguna, a past member of Marin Poetry Center, and has been a featured author and panelist at The Southern Festival of Books and Ventura County Writers.
Additionally, Kate is Founder and CEO of Buckley Media, and is a certified life and corporate coach, and motivational speaker. She currently divides her time between Southern California and the South.
